PARTICIPATING IN A SCIENTIFIC SEMINAR: US-CHINA STRATEGIC COMPETENCE IN SOUTHEAST ASIA SEA
, 09/11/2020 16:11On 15 October 2020, Dr. Tran Dinh Lam – Director of Center for Vietnamese and Southeast Asian Studies attended a scientific seminar focusing on the topic: “US-China strategic competence in the Southeast Asia Sea” hosted by Faculty of International Relations - USSH.
The seminar guest speaker was Mr. Nguyen Truong Giang - Former Ambassador of Vietnam in Brunei, Former Head of the Institute of East Sea Studies of the Diplomatic Academy, Vietnam Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Dr. Nguyen Nha - the 40-year experienced expert in researching Vietnamese seas and islands and Dr. Bui Hai Dang - Dean of Faculty of International Relations, USSH also took part in the seminar.
The seminar focused on three main topics: the world’s current situation, Vietnam’s opportunities and challenges, and US-China strategic competence in Southeast Asia Sea.
Mr. Nguyen Truong Giang, by his strong background knowledge and practical experience, provided the audiences with detailed and authentic information on Vietnam’s sovereignty over seas and islands. The ambassador resolutely expressed his perspective regarding the authentic legal foundation on the country’s sovereignty over seas and islands. Speaking in the seminar, he inspired Vietnamese future generations by the philosophy quote: “Only ordinary people do extraordinary things” and hoped Vietnam to be able to take advantage of good opportunities, overcome numerous difficulties and challenges, and achieve major gains in the economic, social and cultural fields, strengthening Vietnam’s position in ASEAN region as well as the world.
Sharing in the seminar, he recalled the memorable time working as the Vietnam ambassador in Austria. Especially, when talking about the soft power in Austria’s development, he used the image of “traffic baton”, used by the police to direct traffic, as a metonymy which refers to social consensus. Every individual in society obeyed the laws consciously, creating a great economic power. Austria’s economic borders were not limited within the national territory, but extended to African, American as the result of the foreign investment boom. Taking Austria’s case into consideration, the Southeast Asia Sea situation has to comply with the general regulations and respect the international laws under the ASEAN’s cooperative spirit in order to create an environment of solidarity, exploit communal resources, aim for peaceful and prosperous development, and avoid unnecessary provocations that lead to war conflicts.
