TOURIST TRAINING WORKSHOP: DEVELOPMENT OF SUSTAINABLE HOMESTAY IN HO CHI MINH CITY

On October 16th, 2020 in USSH, as a part of TOURIST’s training course, Center for Vietnamese and Southeast Asian Studies hosted a training workshop about the topic: “Development of sustainable homestay in Ho Chi Minh City” with the participation of representatives of two local homestay businesses in HCMC.

The workshop also had the participation of Prof. Chung Hoang Chuong - Center for International Studies (SCIS), HCMUSSH, Mr. Trinh Minh Cuong - Founder Happy Young House, Mrs. Phuong Khanh - VLink Joint Stock Company, Dr. Tran Dinh Lam - Director of Center for Vietnamese and Southeast Asian Studies and TOURIST project’s members.

Speaking in the workshop, Prof. Chung Hoang Chuong elucidated some definitions related to tourist accommodation establishments as well as the origin and formation process of homestay. His sharing summarized that the fundamental features, which this type of business needs to build and develop,  were making the differences and aiming for sustainable development in the future. Besides, the Professor expressed his concern about the emissions from tourism activities, which puts enormous stress on Earth imperceptibly. 
 
Following up on the workshop, Mr. Trinh Minh Cuong, based on his practical experience, stated three important elements, which should be concentrated on when doing homestay business, were history - culture, human resource, and business administration. By conserving and developing these values, his homestay chain Happy Young House gained initial achievements with 19 houses in total. In the era of technology,  he stated, the application of science and technology on promoting their business plays a key role in the marketing campaign toward potential customers. At the end of his talk, he truthfully shared his difficulties and challenges that he encountered in the very first steps of doing this kind of business.

After the workshop, the TOURIST project’s members had the opportunity to enhance both theoretical and practical knowledge and received the answers in detail for their wonder on the policy for sustainable development of homestay in Vietnam. That helped them draw a realistic and particular picture of the current situation on tourism development in Vietnam and the world.
