MEET AND GREET WITH STUDENTS OF PANYAPIWAT INSTITUTE OF MANAGEMENT, BANGKOK
, 05/03/2020 08:03On November 4th 2019, at the invitation of Prof. Mitsuhiro Kagami of Panyapiwat Institute of Management (PIM), Dr. Tran Dinh Lam had a meet and greet with the PIM students of the Business Administration Faculty.
With funding from the ASEAN Foundation – Japan, PIM has extended invitations to scholars from the region to come and give lectures to students of Teikyo University, Japan who are studying at PIM, and other PIM students coming from many countries, such as: Taiwan, Laos, Myanmar, and Thailand.
On the subject of economic reform and foreign investment in Vietnam, Dr. Tran Dinh Lam gave a presentation on the country’s socioeconomic shift from planned economy to market economy. Vietnam’s process of integrating itself into other countries in Southeast Asia was to reduced tensions and conflicts in the Indochina Sea, turning what was a battlefield into a market and encouraging substantial growth within the economy. Efforts by the government to implement open door and outward looking policies have breathed new life into the economy, attracting foreign direct investment (FDI) to Vietnam. With that being said, reception of FDI displays some inherent flaws of the economy. Vietnam's efforts are not strong enough to maintain long-term sustainable development. As it stands, the ratio of export of goods in FDI enterprises accounts for far too high a percentage in the nation’s total gross domestic product (GDP). This speaks volumes about the inferiority of private enterprises in Vietnam. The government needs to plan more new policies to incentivize these enterprises to invest in technology and human resources so as to better adapt to the socioeconomic development process.
The exchange created an opportunity for students of different nationalities to come together and learn from one another. The students got into heated debates and raised many fundamental issues needed to make ASEAN into a favorable environment for investors to do business and networking in order to maintain peace and cooperative development. The history of Khmer Rouge killing millions of people in Cambodia and instilling instability into economic development was also brought up and discussed as a reminder and a warning to countries in the region that such scenario must not be allowed to happen once more in the future.
The lecture also touched on the issue of US-China trade war and what ASEAN needs to do to promote cooperation, mutual understanding, sharing of human resources, goods circulation, and risk minimization. To maintain peace and common prosperity, belief in a future of economic integration and unity of people must be established.
