PROFESSOR OGATA FROM CHUO UNIVERSITY, JAPAN PAID A WORKING VISIT TO HANOI AND BEN TRE

, 09/01/2018 09:01

On 22 December 2017, through the introduction by Dr. Tadashi Kikuchi, Teikyo University, Japan, Dr. Tran Dinh Lam had a working day with Prof. Toshio Ogata - Honorary Professor, Institute of Economic Research, Chuo University, Tokyo, Japan. He is also the Environmental Consultant for the Institute of Strategy and Policy on Natural Resources and Environment of Hanoi.

The working session focused on the green economy, the model of "Green Rest Area" in Japan and the significance of this model to rural development. This was mentioned in the article "Economic Corridor and Green Rest Station",  Eco-Economics magazine, the 52nd edition released in January 2017.
By managing and using biological resources sustainably, this model will help Vietnam conserve and maintain biodiversity to obtain sustainable benefits in the future. It will also foster the relationship between humans and nature where socio-economic activities (agriculture, forestry and fishery) are maintained and developed. This model has been globally recognized and Japan is also one of the countries that effectively embrace this model.
After the meeting, Prof. Ogata had a visit to a coconut candy factory in Ben Tre. The company was established more than 30 years ago, started as a traditional, small-scale factory, and now has its own closed and modern production system. Moreover, each candy is also made with heart by the people of Ben Tre.
The quality of Ben Tre coconut candy is highly appreciated because of not only the delicious taste but also its environmental friendliness. This is also the pride of the hospitable land Ben Tre. In addition, it was also an unforgettable event for this province when Ms. Pham Thi To successfully regained the brand name "Ben Tre coconut candy" from China.
During this trip, Prof. Ogata introduced the model of "Green Rest Area" - a very popular cultural and tourist destination in Japan with a hope to develop and build this model in Vietnam, especially in Mekong Delta provinces because of the favorable natural conditions and the suitability of the ecological environment here.
The "Green Rest area" model will help local people introduce clean and environmentally friendly products, promote local culture and tourism, as well as develop regional economies. This is a great tourism potential, which can attract inbound and outbound tourists to come  and learn about local culture. Most importantly, the harmony with nature embraced in this model will contribute to a sustainable socio-economic development for not only the locality but also for Vietnam as a whole.
