MEKONG CONNECT 2023: CONNECTING SUPPLY CHAINS AND VALUE CHAINS BETWEEN THE ECONOMIC REGION OF HO CHI MINH CITY AND THE MEKONG DELTA TOWARDS A GREEN AND SUSTAINABLE ECONOMY
, 25/12/2023 10:12On November 15-16, 2023, Dr. Tran Dinh Lam - Director of the International Cooperation Program, Center for Vietnam and Southeast Asian Studies attended the Mekong Connect 2023 program with the theme: "Connecting supply chains and value chains between the economic region of Ho Chi Minh City and the Mekong Delta towards a green and sustainable economy" held in Ho Chi Minh City by the People's Committee of Ho Chi Minh City, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and the Ministry of Science and Technology.
At the forum, scholars expressed the need to have a new connection in addition to improving old connections focusing on rice production and rice export, benefiting farmers. According to Assoc. Prof. Dr. Le Anh Tuan, to focus on an ecologically sustainable agricultural model, it is necessary to remove the restrictions on farmers and encourage economic model transformation, which does not focus on rice monoculture. In addition, the development of high-quality goods requires the cooperation of local authorities and market connectivity to give people in the Mekong Delta more options in livelihood development.
The forum also emphasized internal resources in the Western area. The migration to Ho Chi Minh City and the Southeast provinces makes the local human resources always in short supply, affecting the long-term sustainable development of the locality in particular and the whole country in general. In addition, the development and expansion of vocational schools is still limited while there are too many universities, leading to the lack of specialized human resources to serve the production and development of livelihoods.
Mekong Connect 2023 marks the first time the forum has expanded the scope of development links at the regional level in Ho Chi Minh City and all 13 provinces and cities of the Mekong Delta, aiming to become the annual public-private economic dialogue forum of the economic region of Ho Chi Minh City, in association with the Mekong Delta region and the Southeast provinces, to create a space to approach, discuss and propose opportunities, challenges and solutions that directly affect the economic situation of the region.
