2022 FLAS FELLOWSHIP - CVSEAS VIETNAMESE LANGUAGE PROGRAM
, 05/09/2022 17:09On 15 June 2022, Phong Hong, a 2022 FLAS fellow began his online Vietnamese program with the Center for Vietnamese and Southeast Asian Studies. Phong is pursuing his Master degree in Computational Epidemiology & System Modeling at the University of Michigan. His aim is to refine his Vietnamese reading and writing skills as well as exploring public health policy in Vietnam, which will greatly benefit Phong’s research in the coming years.
The 140-hour program offers two themes: 80 hours aimed at reinforcing vocabulary, structures and expressions of Upper Intermediate level and 60 hours tailored to exploring public health&policy in Vietnam.
Classes are held online via Zoom and each session lasts for 3 hours. In addition to learning from the textbook, Phong also practiced reading and analyzing news articles about current events on public health in Vietnam.
Phong’s sharings on the program:
“The past months with learning Vietnamese have been wonderful. I find learning with An enjoyable because she offers diverse learning mediums. In addition to our textbooks, we've also been using podcasts and music for listening exercises, and newspapers for reading exercises. Beyond the Vietnamese language, these activities helped me learn more about my culture. I am seeing a noticeable difference with my language comprehension. Throughout our time together, I've informed An my learning preferences (i.e topics, materials, methods) and I'm grateful that she has been attentive to my needs as her student.”
Phong and his instructor, Ms An are reading a notice issued by the Ministry of Health
about performing medical services for LGBT people.
