THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF VIETNAM - INDIA DIPLOMATIC RELATIONS
, 09/02/2022 14:02On January 6th, 2022, the Consulate General of India in Ho Chi Minh City in collaboration with the Department of Foreign Affairs held the 50th anniversary of Vietnam – India diplomatic relations (7/1/1972 – 7/1/2022).
The event was organized in the Ho Chi Minh Municipal Theater with the participation of Mr. Phan Van Mai - Member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam, Deputy Secretary of the municipal Party Committee, Chairman of the People's Committee of Ho Chi Minh City; Mr. Madan Mohan Sethi - Consul General of India in Ho Chi Minh City; Mr. Martin Maier - Consul General of Switzerland in Ho Chi Minh City; municipal leaders and those from southern localities alongside Indian community representatives based in Ho Chi Minh City. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ngo Thi Phuong Lan - President of USSH and Dr. Tran Dinh Lam - Director of CVSEAS also attended the event.
Speaking at the event, Mr. Phan Van Mai highlighted the flourishing development of the traditional friendship and multifaceted cooperation between Vietnam and India after the unification of Vietnam. Since the two countries upgraded their relations to the comprehensive strategic partnership in 2016, Vietnam has always affirmed its consistent policy of attaching importance to, strengthening, and promoting relations with India. In 2021, despite the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, India was still one of the top 10 trading partners of Vietnam, with two-way trade turnover hitting nearly 11 billion USD - an increase of nearly 40 percent year-on-year. Mr. Mai expressed his appreciation for the valuable support from India such as the provision of COVID-19 treatment medicine and medical oxygen for Vietnam and the transfer of vaccine production technology. In particular, when the outbreak started to expand in Ho Chi Minh City, the Indian Community donated medical equipment to frontline hospitals and provided vehicles carrying necessities to many places. The relationship between Vietnam and India was a testament to the trust, friendship, and strong commitment of both countries’ leaders and people, Mr. Mai said, expressing his belief that this foundation-based bilateral cooperation would make the comprehensive strategic partnership between Vietnam and India, and the cooperation between Ho Chi Minh City and India in particular more developed.
Mr. Madan Mohan Sethi - Consul General of India in HCMC said the 50th anniversary of the establishment of India - Vietnam diplomatic relationship was a significant milestone for both countries. He emphasized that India enjoyed excellent friendly and cordial relations with Vietnam. This relationship in the last 50 years had become stronger with the passage of time. Both countries stood for each other in times of crisis. Vietnam was one of the most important partners with a strong linkage on commerce, culture, and connectivity. The consul general claimed that Vietnam was a reliable friend of India and the cooperation between the two sides had been expanded to many important fields, such as education, oil and gas, hydropower, diplomacy, start-ups, and space technology, adding that there remains potential for both sides to further step up all-around cooperation the near future He highly appreciated the support that the Vietnamese Government and people have given to India in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic, saying that India will certainly always remember this precious help. On this occasion, he hoped provincial leaders would enhance partnership and cooperation in different fields of mutual need and mutual benefits. He stated that India would be happy to extend its helping hand to see a highly prosperous and developed Vietnam.
On the same day evening, the Consulate General of India in Ho Chi Minh City also organized the reception with the participation of Mr. Madan Mohan Sethi - Consul General of India in Ho Chi Minh City, Mr. Le Hoa Binh - Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Ho Chi Minh City, and Indian community and enterprises in HCMC.
