SEMINAR ON SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT IN THE MEKONG DELTA TO 2030, WITH A VISION TO 2045

On December 10th, 2021, the Central Economic Commission in collaboration with the Can Tho City Party Committee and Ho Chi Minh City National University held a seminar on "Social and economic development in the Mekong Delta to 2030, with a vision to 2045". The seminar had the participation of Mr. Tran Tuan Anh - Politburo member and Head of the Party Central Committee's Economic Commission as the chairman, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Vu Hai Quan - President of VNUHCM, secretaries of the provincial party committee, and central and local ministries. The seminar also welcomed the participation of institutes, universities, experts, scientists, and leaders of 13 provinces in the Mekong Delta region. Dr. Tran Dinh Lam - Director of CVSEAS, also attended the event.
Speaking at the seminar, Mr. Tran Tuan Anh stated that after 18 years of implementing Politburo’s Resolution 21, numerous achievements had been recorded on socio-economic development and assurance of national defense and security in the region. The Mekong Delta region affirmed its position as the leading center of production and export of rice, marine products, seafood, and fruits in the country. Besides, Mr. Tran Tuan Anh highly appreciated the research, forecasts, and proposals of experts, scientists, and localities on the economic and social development of the Mekong Delta region.
At the workshop, experts, scientists, and local leaders presented the research on opinions, goals, orientations, and solutions on science and technology development, human resources, working opportunities, healthcare, and social security in the Mekong Delta until 2030, with a vision to 2045; solutions to protect natural resources and respond to climate change in the Mekong Delta until 2030, with a vision to 2045; the Mekong Delta region planning in the period of 2021-2030, with a vision to 2045; and socio-ecological approaches for sustainable development in the mega-deltas. In the discussion, besides the achievements, the seminar participants pointed out a series of challenges and bottlenecks for and discussed the multi-dimensional view of the socio-economic development in the Mekong Delta.

The seminar made an important contribution to strengthening the scientific and practical arguments to serve the project of summarizing Resolution 21-NQ/TW. Based on the seminar results, the authority would send their proposals to the Politburo and the Secretariat of the Party Central Committee for orientations towards sustainable economic and social development in the Mekong Delta in the new period.
