In his opening remarks, Mr. Toshiki Ando highlighted that the Japan – Vietnam exchange has been established for a long time with the Japan Town in Hoi An as a typical example. These days, thanks to Vietnam’s economic development and the improvement of its status in the world arena, the two countries’ relations have been strengthened in various fields, which are well exemplified with the fact that the number of Japanese enterprises has dramatically increased and that of Vietnamese students in Japan also keeps going up. Given these trends, Mr. Toshiki Ando commented that the Vietnam – Japan relations have become more and more important to both countries.

The Japan Foundation is a public organization which was founded in 1972 with the objective of carrying out international cultural exchange programs and promoting the mutual understanding between Japanese people and others all around the world. The Japan Foundation focuses on three major fields: arts and cultural exchange, Japanese-language education overseas, and Japanese studies and intellectual exchange. It now has 22 overseas offices, and Mr. Toshiki Ando is the fourth director of the Japan Foundation Center for Cultural Exchange in Vietnam.
