LOW PER CAPITA INCOME, VIETNAM STILL RANKED 6TH WITH OVERSEAS STUDENTS IN THE U.S.
, 05/09/2016 14:09According to the latest report by the Student and Exchange Visitor Information – SEVIS (March 2016), Vietnam was ranked 6th out of 10 countries which have the highest number of overseas students in the U.S.
Latest figures from a report by HSBC – The Value of Education “Foundations for the Future” – show that the U.S. tops the list of countries which parents would consider for their child’s overseas higher education. Almost half of the surveyed (48%) ranked America in the top three destinations in terms of education out of 50 selected countries. Yet, the U.S. costs them the most with an annual tuition fee going up to US$33,215 for international students.
The findings of the survey with the participation of 6,241 parents in 15 countries indicate that among those choosing the U.S. as their most preferred destination for their child’s university education abroad are parents in China (12%), the UAE (12%) and India (10%).
When asked to give a reason for their choice, most parents (59%) say that it is because of better quality of education, and 29% claim that their child would have better job opportunities. Similarly, at the global scale, the most common reasons for parents’ consideration of a country for their child’s university education abroad are also the quality of education (54%) and career prospects it can create for their child (26%).
Although Vietnam is not included in the surveyed countries, a similar trend has been taking place since more and more Vietnamese parents pick the U.S. as the favorite place for their child’s overseas study.
According to the most recent report by the Student and Exchange Visitor Information – SEVIS (March 2016), Vietnam is ranked 6th (after China, India, South Korea, Saudi Arabia and Canada) out of 10 countries which have the highest number of international students in America with 29,101 students following all programs and levels of education.
Within only one year from March 2015 to March 2016, the number of Vietnamese students in the U.S. increased by 11.1 %, only after India (31.1%) and even outstripping China (7.9%). Besides America, Australia, Japan, Canada, the U.K. and New Zealand also attract a lot of Vietnamese students.
“Students and their parents choose the U.S. as the best destination in terms of higher education for they can have admission to top universities and opportunities to enhance their English skills, which play a very important role in the labor market these days. America is the country attracting the biggest number of international students coming for higher education worldwide. There are about one million international students in the U.S. in the academic year 2014/2015, who contributed approximately US$30.8 billion to its economy through their expenditure on tuition and accommodation fees,” said Dr. Allan Goodman, the Institute of International Education’s President and CEO, giving his opinion on the survey’s findings.
“Now there are about 4.5 million undergraduate students studying abroad and the figure is anticipated to double in the near future, expected to reach 8 million in 2025. Better job prospects, opportunities to explore new cultures, international experiences and foreign language improvement are the most significant benefits of studying overseas. Above all, international students can be certain that studying abroad at a higher level is an investment for their future.”
