INDO-PACIFIC REGIONAL WORKSHOP STRENGTHENS EFFORTS AGAINST FOOD FRAUD AND COUNTERFEIT AGRICULTURAL GOODS

From May 9 to 12, 2023, The ASEAN Intellectual Property Academy and USPTO Global Intellectual Property Academy organized the Indo-Pacific Regional Workshop on Enforcement Against Food Fraud and Trade in Counterfeit Agricultural Goods. The workshop was held at The Lancaster Bangkok Hotel in Bangkok, Thailand, with the presence of prominent figures in the field, including Mr. Peter N. Fowler, Senior Counsel for Enforcement at USPTO; Mr. Matthew Kohner, Regional Intellectual Property Attaché for Southeast Asia at USPTO; experts, authorities, and stakeholders from various organizations to address the critical issues of food fraud and counterfeit agricultural goods in the Indo-Pacific region. Dr. Tran Dinh Lam - Director of International Cooperation Program at CVSEAS, also attended the event.

The workshop garnered immense support from organizations dedicated to safeguarding public health and consumer rights. The key objectives of the workshop were to enhance enforcement measures, share best practices, and explore effective strategies for combating food fraud and trade in counterfeit agricultural goods.

The workshop placed a strong emphasis on collaboration and trust-building among member states in the Southeast Asian region. Participants acknowledged the importance of united efforts in promoting community health and the establishment of trust within the community. They emphasized the need to build and protect brands, create a peaceful environment, and foster harmonious cooperation. The workshop also highlighted the significance of utilizing national resources and establishing long-term connections, particularly in the field of higher education.

In the interactive sessions, experts shared their invaluable insights, experiences, and best practices to combat food fraud and counterfeit agricultural goods. Attendees actively engaged in discussions, brainstorming sessions, and knowledge-sharing activities. These interactions served as platforms for networking, collaboration, and the exchange of ideas.

The Indo-Pacific Regional Workshop on Enforcement Against Food Fraud and Trade in Counterfeit Agricultural Goods served as a catalyst for strengthening the region's efforts in protecting consumers, preserving public health, and establishing robust intellectual property rights enforcement measures. The outcomes of this workshop will contribute significantly to consumer protection, as well as the promotion of fair trade practices and the elimination of counterfeit agricultural goods in the Indo-Pacific region.

Upon the invitation of the organizers, Prof. Koji Domon from Waseda University and Prof. Giovanni Battista Ramello, Ph.D., from the University of Turin, Italy, along with Dr. Tran Dinh Lam, presented their research in the recently published book titled "Law and Economics on illegal trades." The report has attracted attention and raised several questions regarding the cooperation between governments and businesses in actively combating counterfeiting and illicit trade.
The collaboration among international organizations, government agencies, and experts during this workshop has laid a solid foundation for future initiatives in combating food fraud and counterfeiting. With a united front, the Indo-Pacific region is poised to build a safer, healthier, and more trustworthy environment for its communities.
