THE SUMMER SCHOOL PROGRAM 2022 WITH INNSBRUCK UNIVERSITY, AUSTRIA
, 16/09/2022 17:09From August 25 to August 31, 2022, the Center for Vietnam and Southeast Asian Studies welcomed students and professors from the University of Innsbruck, Austria for the Summer Program 2022. This is the first program after two years of suspension due to the Covid pandemic. The students are from different faculties of the University of Innsbruck as well as other universities in Austria.
The program offers six lectures on different topics, including Vietnam War, Culture, Religion, Cuisine, Economy and Journalism. Besides being introduced and provided with information about Vietnam's country and culture, the students also have an opportunity to raise several questions as well as sharing their experience during their stay in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi.
In the first lecture, Prof. Dr. Vo Van Sen gave the students an overview of the "Vietnam War". Prof Sen highlighted key events in the two-decade-long resistance war of the Vietnamese people.

With the topic of Vietnamese Culture, Assoc. Dr. Nguyen Ngoc Tho from the Faculty of Culture introduced a very comprehensive introduction of Vietnam including geographical features, regions, ethnic groups as well as customs and traditions. Cultural aspects were found to be interesting by many students. They were very active to ask questions throughout the lecture.

In addition to general knowledge about culture, the presentation on Vietnamese religion by Dr. Duong Ngoc Dung provided a series of explanations on some common characteristics of religions, main religions in Vietnam and their manifestations which can be observed in reality.

With a lecture on Vietnamese cuisine, Nguyen Xuan Trieu introduced yin and yang in Vietnamese cuisine. For example, from the combination of ingredients in Vietnamese dishes such as pho, summer rolls, soup, braised dishes, and fruits, the balance between yin and yang of Vietnamese cuisine is clearly shown. He also gave another lecture on the philosophy of Taoism.

In addition to the topics on social fields, the students also joined Dr. Tran Dinh Lam’s lecture on Vietnam's economy. Dr Lam presented the picture of Vietnam's economy over time, with some highlights of noticable changes, especially after the Doi Moi period. Besides, the program was also honored to welcome Mr. Dietmar Schwank, Commercial Counselor of Austria in Ho Chi Minh City to provide some insights into projects and trading between Austria and Vietnam.

The last lecture about Vietnamese Journalism was delivered by journalist Quynh Trung from Tuoi Tre newspaper. The presentation broadened the students' knowledge on the background as well as the operation of a newspaper with a long and prestigious history in HCMC. During the session, the students also had several questions for the speaker about journalism in Vietnam such as the trend of consuming news on social networks, requirements to become journalists, some news shows in Vietnam, etc.

In addition, the students participating in the summer program 2022 also had the opportunity to visit Vietnam's historical sites such as Cu Chi tunnels, learned about the manufacturing of the Vietnamese garment industry at Nha Be Garment Group (HCMC). These activities have increased students’ cultural awareness as well as offering them practical learning opportunities.
2022 marks the 19th year of the summer school program - an annual activity hosted by the Center for Vietnam and Southeast Asian Studies in collaboration with the University of Innsbruck to promote understanding about Vietnam through not only academic activities but also practical experiences.
