FIELD RESEARCH IN LAO CAI PROVINCE
, 05/10/2022 16:10From September 19th to September 23rd, within the implementation of the research program on socio-cultural life of ethnic minority living in the border areas between Vietnam and China, Center for Vietnamese and Southeast Asian Studies (CVSEAS), University of Social Sciences and Humanities Ho Chi Minh City, in cooperation with Waseda University (Japan) has conducted field research in Lao Cai Province
The research team members were Dr. Tran Dinh Lam - Director of CVSEAS, Assoc. Prof. Koji Domon - Senior Researcher, Waseda University, Ms. Chao Thi Yen MA - Interpreter -The Canadian International School Lao Cai and students from Waseda University. The field program was to research the locals’ life, especially women and children in ethnic minority communities. Besides, the research team explored the current issue of human trafficking.
On the research program, the research team was warmly welcomed and worked with Ms. Ma En Hang - Deputy Head of Lao Cai Ethnic Committee. With the sharing of the representative of the Ethnic Committee, the research team grasped and evaluated the situation of social and cultural development as well as an overview of the current issues, especially human trafficking in ethnic minorities. The meeting also agreed on the directions to conduct interview activities to meet the requirements of the research topic. With the guidance and information of the Ethnic Committee, the research team of the Vietnam and Southeast Asia Research Center has the opportunity to work with the local authorities and conduct field surveys and interviews in the three communes of Ta Phin, Muong Hoa and Ngu Chi Son.
The research team received the warm welcome and support of Mr. Ly Van Lam - Chairman of Ta Phin Commune People's Committee, Mr. Ta A Lenh - Chairman of Muong Hoa Commune People's Committee and the leaders of Ngu Chi Son Commune People's Committee and the officials of the 3 communes. With the information collected from in-depth interviews with local people, the research team has achieved the objectives of the study. In addition, the research team also conducts visits and presents books at schools in the three communes above, promoting the message of spreading and sharing knowledge.
This pre-study program is important, helping to understand and identify the problems women and children facing currently and being a prerequisite to expand the research to the whole ASEAN region, thereby proposing solutions to prevent and reverse the bad situation and support the development of women and children's lives in ethnic minority communities.
