KATÉ – RAMÂWAN FESTIVAL AND SCHOLARSHIPS AWARDED TO CHAM STUDENTS IN HCM CITY
, 08/11/2016 16:11On the morning of November 06, 2016, Dr. Tran Dinh Lam attended the Katé – Ramâwan festival and a ceremony of granting scholarships to Cham students who are studying in Ho Chi Minh City.
The Katé – Ramâwan festival is an annual event organized by the Cham people’s Union, which is directly under the management of the Ho Chi Minh City Society for Anthropology. The festival was held with the main purpose of raising funds to award scholarships to Cham students with high academic achievements and freshmen who have just entered universities in HCM City and neighboring regions. In addition, the program also provides Cham students with an opportunity to maintain and promote their cultural identity through folk songs and dances as well as a place for exchanges among Cham people working in HCM City.
This year’s event chose 20 excellent students to receive scholarships, which is worth 1 million VND each, based on the following criteria: achieving outstanding academic results, having life difficulties, and being active in activities launched by the Cham people’s Union. Moreover, the Union offered presents to compliment 29 new Cham students who have just passed the university entrance exam to go to universities in HCM City and the surrounding areas.

Dr. Tran Dinh Lam, CVSEAS’s Director (2nd, L), gave scholarships to the Cham students.

Assoc.Prof.Dr Thanh Phan, CVSEAS’s Deputy Director (7th, L), gave scholarships to the Cham students.
Despite financial difficulties in organizing the event, the Cham people’s Union has held it to award scholarships to Cham students for 12 times. Although little in value, the scholarships have a great meaning to those students, encouraging them to overcome obstacles in life and study at their best. It is hoped that next year’s program will receive more support from authorities, patrons, individuals and other social organizations so that such a meaningful event can be maintained and expanded.
