ORGANIC AGRICULTURE MODEL: FOR THE FUTURE OF OUR EARTH AND OUR CHILDREN
, 05/06/2024 10:06On May 8 2024, Dr. Tran Dinh Lam visited and exchanged ideas with Mr. Tatsuya Uchida, director of IKASU – Caretaker of the Earth, along with Professor Tomy Ogata from Chuo University. The company follows a sustainable, environmentally-friendly model specializing in the production of organic vegetables and fruits using a circular, organic cycle. The model is certified by Japan Agricultural Standards (JAS).
Mr. Tatsuya Uchida and Prof. Tomy Ogata
During the exchange, Mr. Uchida emphasized the need to reassess development to harmonize with nature and humanity. He noted that today's increasingly severe weather is a result of environmental destruction and hasty industrialization in agriculture. Physical and mental health issues are becoming more prevalent. He advocates for a shift towards agriculture that is friendly to the Earth and humanity. Currently, the company operates on 7 hectares of land, producing potatoes, sweet potatoes, onions, cucumbers, tomatoes, cabbages, Chinese cabbages, radishes, carrots, and more, all without chemical fertilizers or pesticides. Fifty percent of the produce is sold in supermarkets, and the other fifty percent is delivered directly to 40 customers, three days a week. All customers must register in advance. Direct delivery costs about 500,000 VND for 10 bags of various items. When purchasing, customers can also contribute an additional 160,000 VND to the Sustainable Agriculture School to support agricultural education for the younger generation. For first-time customers, the company delivers 10 bags of vegetables at half price. If satisfied with the quality, customers can place further orders.
Sustainable Agriculture School
The organic farm is located in two places: Dezunawa and Suwa-cho, Hiratsuka City, Kanagawa Prefecture, about 90 kilometers from Tokyo. In 2017, Mr. Uchida established a Sustainable Agriculture School there to teach natural and organic farming, helping students understand practical applications compared to theoretical knowledge. With the motto "For the future of our Earth and our children," he aims to systematically and comprehensively change sustainable agriculture through nature-friendly production activities. He calls on everyone to support the organic model to help reduce global warming and climate change.
Dr. Tran Dinh Lam and farm's members
Our visit coincided with a local television interview with Mr. Uchida about his achievements. Professor Ogata remarked that Mr. Uchida's passion for his work is a key factor in the success of his model. Although Mr. Uchida graduated from Chuo University with a degree in business administration, he became passionate about agriculture and developed the ecological farming model after nearly 10 years in the field. His focus is on earth-friendly practices and environmentally-friendly crops. Throughout his career, he has written guides on organic vegetable and fruit cultivation without chemical fertilizers and pesticides. He also teaches at the school. With the support of consumers working together for a harmonious, nature-aligned, and practically Earth-protective lifestyle, he hopes this model will spread and develop further. Professor Ogata expressed a desire to support Vietnam in researching and applying this model in the future.
The book, compiled by Mr. Tatsuya Uchida, teaches students about ecological agriculture.
