On Saturday, March 9th, 2024, The Center for Vietnamese and Southeast Asian Studies participated in a seminar with the theme: "Gender in Chinese Cinema and Japanese Popular Culture", held at Nam Thi House (152 Nam Ky Khoi Nghia Street, Ben Nghe Ward, District 1, Ho Chi Minh City), organized by the Vietnam Women's Publishing House in collaboration with the Japan Foundation and Nam Thi House. The event was coordinated by Dr. Nguyen Thi Minh (Ho Chi Minh City University of Education), with two invited speakers, Dr. Alisa Freedman (University of Oregon) and Dr. Phan Thu Van (Ho Chi Minh City University of Education).
During the seminar, Dr. Alisa Freedman presented on powerful women who have overcome obstacles to contribute to the most famous forms of popular culture in Japan. The author demonstrated how Japanese women have faced different choices in their careers, families, as well as access to education and employment compared to other genders, and their difficulties stem from laws, social customs, business practices, and other factors.
On the other hand, Dr. Phan Thu Van discussed the topic "Female Characters in Chinese Cinema Works by Director Li An from a Gender Studies Perspective". Through her research, Dr. Phan Thu Van revealed that the portrayal of women in most of Li An's films often depicts deep and unique characteristics of Chinese and Taiwanese female characters. From this, we gain a new perspective on Li An's gender perception and his experiments in portraying women in the context of cinema at that time.
