WELCOMING PROF. RUBEN JUAREZ, UNIVERSITY OF HAWAII, USA

Prof. Ruben Juarez from the Faculty of Economics, University of Hawaii at Manoa – USA paid a visit to the Center for Vietnamese and Southeast Asian Studies on the occasion of his trip to Vietnam on 27 and 28 March 2015 to learn about the Vietnamese’ need of pursuing a doctoral degree in economics. 

University of Hawaii at Manoa – USA (UH Manoa for short) is the most prestigious university in the Hawaii university system. UH Manoa offers majors of various fields, facilitating the learning and studies of both students and partners. Many international students, including Vietnamese ones, are working and studying at UH Manoa, making up the community’s diversity here, a typically American feature. Up to 37% of Asian students are studying at UH Manoa at the present.

UH Manoa is also one of the few universities that have a unique feature of campus, i.e comprising many different areas on both mainland and island. The departments at UH Manoa are various, including 98 ones for undergraduates, 85 for graduates and 57 for postgraduates.

The Faculty of Economics at UH Manoa has many programs and higher studies in fields such as Economics, Commerce, International Business, Development Economics, Environmental Economics, Energy, History of Economics, Labor and the list goes on. At the moment, besides Business Administration, the Faculty is cooperating with Vietnam National University in Hanoi and HCMC in terms of economic education and training.

On his business trip this time at HCMC on 27 and 28 March 2015, Prof. Rubn Juarez met, discussed and interviewed a lot of students and lecturers from many universities in HCMC such as Hoa Sen University, Foreign Trade University, University of Economics and Law, University of Technology and Education, University of Agriculture and Forestry, University of Economics, etc.

Prof. Ruben highly evaluated the quality of human resources of those universities and said that this was and would be the potentials for the country’s development. Through many interviews with candidates, he was greatly impressed by their quick-witted, open-minded and progressive minds. Meanwhile, he also provided necessary information about the University of Hawaii at Manoa and the Faculty of Economics to suggest a dynamic, competitive and of-high-quality-learning environment to candidates. Prof. Ruben enthusiastically instructed candidates many ways to access sources of scholarships, deadlines for application as well as other requirements.

Prof. Ruben Juarez expressed his expectation to welcome Vietnamese students to UH Manoa for studies and researches. The excellence of Vietnamese students would encourage UH Manoa to aim at developing this human resource and partly contribute to the good relations between Vietnam and the US.
