, 13/02/2009 09:02From 11 December to 15 December 2008, Center for Vietnamese and Southeast Asian Studies (CVSEAS) in collaboration with the University of Tokyo (Japan) joined a research on coffee in Buon Me Thuot.
Attending the program were Prof. Ikemoto Yukio (University of Tokyo, Japan), Dr. Tran Dinh Lam (Director of CVSEAS), Dr. Thanh Phan (Vice Director of CVSEAS). In the occasion, the group attended the international seminar on “The Stable Development Vietnam Coffee and International Economic Integration” which was held in Dak Lak (Highland Central of Vietnam) on December 11, 2008.
In the fieldtrip, the group paid a visit to some coffee companies who gained Utz Certified such as Thang Muoi Coffee, Thang Loi Coffee, … and UTZ Kapeh Rep. Office at Buon Me Thuot City. During this time, Mr. Nguyen Sinh Thiet, representative of Vietnam Utz had a meeting with the group. Prof. Ikemoto Yukio paid a great attention to UTz Organization in Vietnam. To him, the current need of coffee consumption in the world has boosted an encouragement to develop certified coffee in Vietnam – “the stable coffee”. The certified coffee is one of solutions for development of stable coffee in Vietnam. In Vietnam nowadays, there are coffee manufacturing companies who gained UTz Certified such as Eapok Coffee, Krong Ana Coffee, Thang Muoi Coffee, Phuoc An Coffee, etc.
The purpose of the research was improve coffee quality and assign the Vietnam coffee production in the most reasonable and economic way. This was the topic that interested Prof. Ikemoto Yukio, who collaborated with CVSEAS to write a book on “Coffee in Vietnam’s Central Highlands – Historical, Anthropological and Economic Perspectives” in 2007.
