COMPARING THE REGIONAL INTEGRATION OF EU AND ASEAN
, 16/06/2010 17:06On the morning of June 7, 2010, Center for Vietnamese and Southeast Asian Studies and Faculty of Oriental Studies organized a talk by Dr. Yeo Lay Hwee, Director of the European Union Center, Singapore. Attending the talk were Master Tran Cao Boi Ngoc, Vice-head of Department of International Cooperation, Master Nguyen Thanh Tuan, Vice-dean of Faculty of Oriental Studies and Dr Tran Dinh Lam, director of CVSEAS.
With the topic: "Comparing the regional integration of EU and ASEAN", the talk attracted more than 30 lecturers, researchers and students of Faculty of the English language, Faculty of Oriental Studies and Department of Urban Studies, University of Social Sciences and Humanities , National University of Ho Chi Minh City.
Dr. Yeo Lay Hwee presented an overview of two regional organizations in the world and compared the evolution of the two institutions up to date. The two organizations’ area and population are likely equal, but they differ in share of world trade, political institutions, cooperation between member states, membership criteria, etc. Above all, these are two of the most successful regional organizations in the world. Both are active in diplomatic activities of regional and international, making considerable contribution to stability and development in the region.
After the presentation of the Dr. Yeo Lay Hwee, the audience actively engaged in the discussion with her. The most prominent issues in the discussion were the ones towards a common ASEAN currency as Euro and the common visa in ASEAN like the Schengen one in European Union.
