On March 3rd & 4th, 2021, the research team of the Center for Vietnamese and Southeast Asian Studies (CVSEAS), University of Social Sciences and Humanities had a meeting with the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development in their field trip to Hau Giang Province. The research team members were Dr. Tran Dinh Lam - Director of CVSEAS, Mr. Pham Thanh Thoi - Vice Director of CVSEAS, and Mr. Truong Dang Khoa - Union President of Phuc Khang Corporation. The research field trip was to identify and facilitate research activities, which help the local farmers to adapt to the climate change and thereby build a sustainable life for the local people in Hau Giang province in particular and the people in the Mekong Delta region in general.

On the first day of the field trip, the research team had conversation with the representatives of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, which included Mrs. Nguyen Thi Giang - Deputy Director, Mr. Bach Van Son - Manager of Branch of Cultivation and Plant Protection, Mrs. Le Kim Ngoc - Manager of Planning and Professions Office, Mr. Nguyen Van Mang - Deputy Manager of Branch of Agriculture and Rural Development and the officers of Branch of Irrigation. The representatives provided the orientation in supporting and coordinating to implement and develop scientific research projects involved in changing local livelihoods due to the impact of climate change in Hau Giang nowadays. Specifically, Ms.Giang made a detailed introduction to the research team on 4 projects that the Department has been implementing in Hau Giang province to help local farmers switch crops and livestock aiming for sustainable economic growth. They introduced the model of switching from sugarcane and rice, which are often harvested one or two times per year, to fruit and vegetable as well as raising shrimp farms. Crop switching is necessary due to the harsh conditions in Hau Giang which were drought, saltwater intrusion, soaring temperature, and unfavorable weather conditions.

The upcoming plan is to continue to conduct research and analyze more in-depth on the land use process; difficulties in the crop conversion process under the impact of cultural, economic, and social characteristics; the change of land use process due to the impact of climate change, and the market and the policies of the government, enterprises, etc. This is also one of the practical goals that the REACT project funded by the Union European aims for in order to strengthen climate change research and innovation capacities in Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam.
