CVSEAS IN COOPERATION WITH TOKYO NATIONAL UNIVERSITY CARRIED OUT A RESEARCH SURVEY ON CULTURE AND FIELD KNOWLEDGE IN KONTUM

From March 10, 2009 to March 27, 2009, CVSEAS in cooperation with Foreign Languages University (Tokyo National University, Japan) carried out a research survey on culture and field knowledge of the ethnic communities in two districts Kon Plong and Kon Rẫy – Kontum province. The group of research on culture and field knowledge led by Dr. Thành Phần (Vice-director of CVSEAS) did a survey in the areas of Kon Tuc hamlet (Đắc Pne village, Kon Rẫy district), Vichirin hamlet (Hiếu village, Kon Plong district) and Kon K’Tau hamlet (Pơ Ê village, Kon Plong district).

 

The members of the group also included Dr. Trần Đình Lâm (Director of CVSEAS), Dr. La Vĩnh Hải Hà (Faculty of Forestry, University of Agriculture and Forestry - Hồ Chí Minh City), Dr. Toshihiko Shine (Foreign Languages University, Tokyo National University, Japan), etc. and some domestic research units such as Center for Cham Cultural Studies; Faculty of Anthropology (USSH, VNU-HCMC); Hà Nội Institute of Anthropology.

The objective of the research survey is to understand the field knowledge of methods of traditional production, management of natural resources and biological diversity of the ethnic communities in Vietnam and to serve scientific research, teaching, development for ecological tourism and to converse the national cultural heritage; making contribution to supplying scientific material to agencies and organizations of management and international organizations when they plan the policies and projects relevant to the development of economy, culture and society among the ethnic communities in the local areas of Highland's Northern Area.

The main contents of the survey contains: Survey on economic, social and traditionally social characteristics; local people’s knowledge of ecological environment; methods of earning living and the adaptation to the natural environment; the relationship between the methods of earning living and the change of the natural environment under the influence of the modern agriculture; the impacts on the change of economy, culture, society and ecological environment.

Commenting on the survey, Mrs. Trương Thị Ngọc Ánh (Vice Chairwoman of People's Committee of Kontum Province) said that the knowledge from the survey brought a useful source of information for local government in policy and development planning of local community in way that is suitable for every ethnicity, every different geographic area and helps protect the sustainable ecological environment.

The program of the cooperation in research survey got the warmly-hearted support of the communities, the leaders at the local levels such as Ms. Bùi Thị Thanh Vân (Director of Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Kontum), Mr. Phan Thanh Bàng (Deputy Head of Office of Cultural Heritage, DCST of Kontum), Mr. Nguyễn Văn Tân (Vice Chairman of People’s Committee of Kon Rẫy district), Mr. Đặng Thành Nam (Vice Chairman of People’s Committee of Kon Plong district), etc.
