INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE IN TAIWAN

From December 16th to 17th, 2009, Center for Vietnamese and Southeast Asian Studies attended an International Conference on “Enhancing Taiwan-ASEAN Economic Cooperation and Strategy in the Aftermath of the Global Financial Crisis” in Chung-Hua Institution for Economic Research, Taiwan. Participating in the Conference were Dr. Ma Ying-Jeou, President of the Republic of China and a lot of scholars from many countries in the world.

 

Delivering his speech, President Ma Ying-Jeou emphasized his desire to share the information with the scholars to enhance the all-side cooperation between Taiwan and countries in the world, especially ASEAN countries. On the fundamental of education, the countries should together share and develop, and solve the problems on the basis of respecting each other. In the context in the aftermath of the global financial crisis, the countries should strengthen their cooperation to outline the common strategy and develop together. The president raised a question ”Why not to have the formula ASEAN + 4?” to promote the cooperation between ASEAN and four regional powers: China, Japan, Korea and Taiwan. Also, he paid special attention to strengthening the practical effectiveness in the cooperation between Taiwan and Southeast Asian countries.

Taiwan is the largest investor in Vietnam. In order to help Vietnam develop, Taiwan has invested in a lot of economic bases and offered a lot of scholarships in all fields of applied sciences to the young Vietnamese researchers.
