, 23/06/2009 22:06International Symposium: "Japanese medium and small-sized enterprises – the way to success” was held by Center for Vietnamese and Southeast Asian Studies in coordination with the fund of Japan Foundation at University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Ho Chi Minh city on June 11-12, 2009.
Attending the Symposium were Prof. Dr. Võ Văn Sen, Rector of USSH, Sir Ikuo Mizuki, Consul General of Japan, Dr. Nguyễn Tiến Dũng, Chief of Administrative Office of VNU, HCMC, Bàng Anh Tuấn M.A, Head of Office of International Cooperation, international scholars from Japan, Thailand, Taiwan, Singapore… representatives of 105 medium and small-sized enterprises, media reporters and journalists, teachers and students of University of Social Sciences and Humanities, HoChiMinh city.
In the current context of the “doi moi” process and the “open-door” policy, SMEs in Vietnam play a very important role in the national economy, accounting for 19% of the labor forces and 27% of the export turnover. However, in comparison to the competitive index of the development of SMEs in the region ours is very low; the SMEs in Vietnam are still young, weak in terms of management and investment capital and vulnerable in terms of competitiveness, and just on starting point. According to Japan’s Small and Medium Enterprise Agency, the so-called SMEs in Japan shares almost 100% of all enterprises and shares 70% of employees.
Studying the uniqueness and specialty from the experience of the SMEs of Japan is essential. However, the scholars warned that, according to the specific context of each country, we should apply the lessons of experience to Vietnamese practice appropriately, and we should not apply them mechanically.
After the presenting and external reading, raising questions and discussing of the scholars as well as the audience, we know that we should enhance our “supporting industry” which is still in the process of development. “Japan quality schools” should be constructed to have a longstanding apprentice system and to train well-qualified workers. Within an industry, the “cooperative climate” could help lead to “Keiretsu-series of union” cooperation between a lot of small and medium sized enterprises. Nowadays the enterprises pay so much attention to the quantity that they forget the quality. They need focus on the quality in order to establish a prestigiuos trademark in the world. Besides, the scholars suggested that the government take measures to lend the SMEs, especially the SMEs lacking capital or in financial problems and not lend only the big enterprises developing strongly.
International Symposium:” Japanese medium and small-sized enterprises – the way to success” made its contribution to suggesting the feasible solutions in order to help Vietnamese SMEs overcome current difficulties and orientate to stably develop in the future.
