MEETING WITH DR. YEOH SENG GUAN FROM MONASH UNIVERSITY, MALAYSIA
, 01/12/2010 10:12Dr Yeoh Seng Guan, specializing in Anthropology, Monash University, Malaysia, visited and worked with Center for Vietnamese and Southeast Asian Studies at University of Social Sciences and Humanities, VNU-HCMC for 5 days, November 15 to 19, 2010.
The visit of Doctor aimed at studying the cultural identities and people of Vietnam, as well as social problems that Vietnam is facing. Aside from studying and research, Doctor also wanted this visit as a bridge between the University of Monash and University of Social Sciences and Humanities, and in the near future he will take his students to Vietnam to do research and practice .
Doctor Yeoh desired Center affiliates and officially helps when he brings his students to Vietnam students to practice. He hoped through meeting and talking to experts, his students will have an clear overview of the situation and the country of Vietnam. Besides, he also contacted non-governmental organizations (NGOs) operating in the humanitarian field.
In addition to social activities, he is also very interested in cultural activities. He was very excited when he first viewed the puppet show, visited ancient temples and pagodas in HCMC. He was very surprised at Hindu temples, knowing that the Indian community in Vietnam, though still small, but shows their identity. He was excited and promised to lead his students to learn about the cultural beliefs of Vietnam. Dr. Yeoh also visited Cu Chi tunnels and said it would complete his picture of Vietnam history.
This visit of Dr Yeoh builds linkages between Center for Vietnamese and Southeast Asian Studies, University of Social Sciences and Humanities, VNU-HCMC with Monash University, opening up prospects for cooperation between the two universities as well as bringing the images of Vietnam to foreign students.
