MEETING WITH THE DELEGATION OF TOKYO UNIVERSITY PROFESSORS, JAPAN
, 24/08/2010 09:08On August 19, 2010 Center for Vietnamese and Southeast Asian Studies met with a delegation of Japanese professors dealing with the reports on Vietnam's economy. Attending the reception were Prof. Dr. Nguyen Tien Luc, Director of Center for Japanese Studies, Dr. Ho Ngoc Phuong, Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics, Mr Nguyen Tuan Nghia, Specialist of Department of International Cooperation and Dr. Tran Dinh Lam, Director of CVSEAS. The Japanese delegation was led by Prof. Dr. Akira Suehiro, Director of the Institute of Social Science, University of Tokyo and accompanied by the members: Keiichiro Oizumi (Senior Researcher, Japan Research Institute), Seiya Suekgawa (Senior Researcher, JETRO Bangkok Office, METI), Yoshiaki Miyajima (Assistant Professor, Hokkai Gakuen University, Sapporo), Masaki Sato (A member of Japanese Chamber of Commerce at Bangkok, GMS), Yuichiro Yoshitomi (administrative staff of our Institute), Yuko Fukuda (administrative staff of the University of Tokyo) from the University of Tokyo, Japan. In particular, attending the reception was also Mr Kikuchi Tadashi from Consulate General of Japan in HCM City.
Dr. Tran Dinh Lam reported on the economic reform in Vietnam: a preliminary definition of subsidy regime, the planned economy and the economic reforms following the Sixth Congress of the Communist Party of Vietnam. The reform of economy has helped Vietnam obtained many important achievements, raising the living standards of people. Dr. Lam also introduced the economic models typically contributing to the development of Vietnam, especially referring to the development of Binh Duong province.
Dr. Ho Ngoc Phuong presented preliminary focus on the history of Vietnam, with particular emphasis to the modern period as leader Ho Chi Minh led the people of Vietnam to expand relations with the countries in Southeast Asia, China, Russia, Japan and the United States.
The delegation of Japan raised many very open questions and Dr. Phuong and Dr. Lam answered them thoroughly. What they were most interested in is enhancing the economic cooperation between Vietnam and Japan.
Through this visit, the delegation of Japan has a better understanding of the economic development of Vietnam. This is the basis for strengthening the cooperation between Vietnam and Japan, as well as the one between the University of Tokyo, Japan and University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Ho Chi Minh City.
