PROF. HANNES EBERT FROM GERMAN INSTITUTE OF GLOBAL AND AREA STUDIES VISITS CVSEAS
, 14/11/2016 11:11On November 07, 2016, Dr. Tran Dinh Lam, Director of the Center for Vietnamese and Southeast Asian Studies, had a discussion with Prof. Hannes Ebert about Vietnam’s status and its role in Southeast Asia to “the rise of China”.
Prof. Hannes Ebert (German Institute of Global and Area Studies – GIGA) has been conducting a project called “Contested Leadership in International Relations – Power Politics in South America, South Asia and sub-Saharan Africa” with the focus on how those countries would accept the regional policies shaped by the “emerging powers” such as Brazil, India and China.
In the meeting, Prof. Hannes Ebert briefly talked about the contested regional leadership claimed by some rising powers such as Brazil, India and China. He also mentioned the regional conflict among India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh as well as their experience in dealing with such tension. Regarding the complicated issue between Southeast Asia and China, he thought that Vietnam plays an important role in connecting other countries in the region.
In order to enjoy peace, cooperation and development, there is no way other than to respect mutual sovereignty, comply with international laws and accept the decision over the East Sea ruled by the international tribunal in The Hague, emphasized Prof. Hannes Ebert. The meeting took place in an open and cordial atmosphere among German and Vietnamese scholars, who were willing to learn from each other. Prof. Hannes Ebert hoped that there would be more cooperation in doing scientific research, organizing conferences and seminars on various issues such as politics, economics, and education, etc. for experts in the two countries to participate in.
