SEMINAR ON COPYRIGHT IN VIETNAM
, 24/03/2009 19:03On the afternoon of March 16th, 2009 a seminar on copyright in Vietnam was held under cooperation of Prof. Koji Domon (Waseda University, Japan) and Center for Vietnamese and Southeast Asian Studies (CVSEAS). Giving presentations to the seminar were Prof. Kiyoshi Nakamura, Prof. Koji Domon and Dr. Michael Yuan. Attending the seminar were composers Trần Mạnh Tuấn and Quốc Bảo, media representatives (Tuổi Trẻ, Người Lao Động, Sài Gòn Giải Phóng, Thanh Niên), lecturers and students in HCMC. Dr. Trần Đình Lâm, Director of CVSEAS, chaired the seminar and encouraged the audience to contribute many precious ideas.

The professors and doctor presented the history of copyright in the world, the internationalization and harmonization of copyright and compared the differences between property rights and copyright. When the digital technology develops, copyright has had to face a great challenge that the cost of copying and distribution is close to zero. Then they emphasized the piracy of copyright which becomes very serious in developing countries in general and in Asian countries in particular. In some countries the copyright imfringement accounts for 50% and even 90% of the creative products, causing the loss of billions of dollars. Poor people can not afford to purchase the products at box prices; as a result of this, they have to buy illegal products at greatly lower prices. The authorities sometimes ignore the piracy that is in favor of the majority of poor people.

The audience excitedly discussed the issues. They agreed that there has been copyright imfringement in Vietnam that has caused considerable loss to musicians, composers, producers and singers. Especially, students of faculty of international relationship shared the ideas that they love their idols and they do not want to do any harm to them; therefore, they purchase legal products in spite of their high prices. Also, a young man gives his girlfriend a gift which must be worthy. And he chooses a legal product with high quality. The audience were moved to know that producer Trương Ngọc Minh in Phong Phú Sắc Việt Co., Ltd in HCMC spent USD200,000 on a copyright for his future products. Even under the world financial crisis, the young and the serious people still keep moral values in life.
