VIETNAMESE MUSIC IN THE EYES OF THE AMERICANS

, 04/08/2009 06:08

On the morning of July 14, 2009, Center for Vietnamese and Southeast Asian Studies attended the talk by doctoral candidate Alexander M. Cannon on the topic ”Đờn ca tài tử in Vietnam” held by USSH and Public Affairs Section of Consulate General of The United States of America.

Doctoral candidate Alex presented the generalization of American music – three components of lively modern American music: music created by native Americans, one by peoples in the States and one by the world mingled with the American.

Alex especially focused on American music created by peoples in the States. Above all is the one of the immigrants, especially the negroes with original types of music such as Jazz, Rock, etc. Originally, American music has been mingled with all the ones from all over the world. Alex showed many illustrations. For example, American music contained the extract of melody Kalinka by Russians.

In terms of American music, it is impossible without the contribution of Vietnamese music, especially Đờn ca tài tử studied by Alex. During the presentation, Alex many times illustrated many melodies of Đờn ca tài tử performed in the States so that the audience could enjoy it.

The integration and closeness between the two countries depend on many elements. Among them, music, certainly plays a considerable role.
