On December 13, Dr. Tran Dinh Lam had a talk to students from the Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore within an annual cooperative program between the University and the Ho Chi Minh City University of Social Sciences and Humanities (HCMC USSH).
The participant students, whose majors include economics, business administration, accounting, engineering, chemistry, biology and mathematics, had a chance to gain knowledge of economic reform in Vietnam. Changes such as open-door policies to attract foreign investment, outsourcing, regional integration, boosting export and other economic sectors, etc. have had great contributions to Vietnam’s economic growth.

The students from Singapore are concerned about the relationship between economic development and ecological balance. Everybody is beneficiaries of the reform process; therefore, it is necessary to encourage public criticism and promote democracy in order to curb corruption.

Moreover, the students said that as for human resource training, the Singapore’s government pays a lot of attention to attract talents outside the country with several strategies such as granting scholarships to excellent students in other countries for them to study in Singapore and creating well-paid job opportunities (professors, doctors, engineers, etc).
NTU’s students go on a study trip to Vietnam every year, which provides them with a practical program in connecting the theory they have learnt at school with their field trips in Southeast Asian countries.
