PROF. KOJI DOMON, WASEDA UNIVERSITY VISITS CVSEAS
, 24/03/2017 15:03On March 08, the Center for Vietnamese and Southeast Studies welcomed Prof. Koji Domon, Waseda University, to visit and do research on copyright and intellectual property in Vietnam.
Talking about his opinion on Vietnam’s economic development since his first visit in 2005, the professor said that Vietnam had missed great opportunities to build up trust in development, making enthusiasm for economic reform as not passionate as earlier. The basis foundation for Vietnam’s industrialization as well as the key to success is the exploitation of the trained workforce, but, unfortunately, Vietnam seems to have not yet made use of this important advantage.
He valued Vietnamese students who come to study in Japan thanks to scholarships since they contribute to raising the school’s prestige, with the University of Tokyo as a typical example. Vietnamese students are among the top ten of the school’s graduation examinations. Even at the Waseda University, in his class, Prof. Koji Domon met a student named Quynh Trang who comes from Hanoi. She was able to give solutions to difficult economic problems with which even Japanese students had to struggle. More interestingly, she answered the questions in a clear and convincing way, which greatly impressed the professor. In March 2016, Trang was the valedictorian of the School of Social Sciences, was directly conferred with the degree by the
University’s President and was also selected to make a speech at the graduation ceremony. In addition, there are outstanding students studying at the Graduate School of Applied Linguistics and also taking part in many studies conducted by the school’s professors.
To attract this workforce to return to the country, Vietnam needs to create a fair competitive environment, arousing their enthusiasm and passion so they can devote themselves to serving the country. By doing so, they will contribute to promoting the sustainable development of the economy as well as lowering the risk of depending too much on foreign investment. According to the professor, those people deserve to receive salary worth of their effort and competency.
Vietnam also needs to create favorable conditions for the private sector to build up their brand names. The professor values internal strengths of Vietnamese people. What is important now is how to provide an environment for those forces to spread as a national strength in the development process. He hopes there will be a close connection between Japan and Southeast Asian nations, which all share a mutual aim for a long-term development and prosperity in the future.
Concerning his plan in years to come, the professor said that he would write about his practical experience in his projects on copyright in different countries, from Mexico, India, China, Thailand, Malaysia, Cambodia, and Laos to several regions in Vietnam such as Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi and Lang Son, which have left him with strong impressions in his studies.
