Prof. Dr. Nguyen Thi Hong Xoan presented at the workshop at Tra Vinh University

Prof. Dr. Nguyen Thi Hong Xoan from USSH lectured on Service Learning, a method of learning and teaching simultaneously, a form of serving the public. To be more specific, Service Learning is a teaching method in which the teacher will be lecturing based on his or her experience, as well as the combination of working with the public and academic knowledge. In other words, experience gained from activities will be a part of teaching curriculum.

“Social innovation in a learning community so as to meet the current needs of the community, Service Learning is the combination of learning in classrooms and serving the community, helping students better understand themselves while exploring and forming confidence, as well as commitment to society.” – said Prof. Xoan during her lecture.

The prestigious professor also pointed out the difference in implementing Service Learning method regarding efficiency and each party’s benefits including the education institution, students and community in comparison with the traditional method. Most importantly, Service Learning points out to every student that there’s a gap between theory and reality.

Dr. Tran Dinh Lam, director of Center for Southeast Asian Studies, spoke highly of the workshop. According to him, the workshop was practical, beneficial and succeeded in providing lecturers at Tra Vinh University – as well as lecturers from other universities in Vietnam - with new, innovative and creative teaching methods.
