A VISIT TO CVSEAS BY RESEARCH INSTITUTE OF COMPARATIVE HISTORY AND CULTURE AND FAR EAST UNIVERSITY (SOUTH KOREA)
, 11/04/2011 13:04On February 23, 2009, after working with the Rector of University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Hồ Chí Minh City, Prof. Edward J. Baker, Research Institute of Comparative History and Culture (Hanyang University, South Korea), and Prof. Kee IL Lyu, Rector of Far East University (South Korea), paid a visit to Center for Vietnamese and Southeast Asian Studies in order to look for the chances of research cooperation between Vietnam and Korea.
Professor Baker had high expectations of Vietnamese human resources - those who studied in developed countries and came back to develop the country by themselves. Beforehand being in charge of Harvard Yenching Institute scholarship program, he granted many American scholarships to universities in Vietnam. After coming back, scholarship grantees have made considerable contribution to the development of Vietnam.
He was very proud of his contribution to the relationship between Harvard University and Korea as well as between Harvard University and Vietnam. He was impressed by the rise of the energetic people suffering from the havocking war. He always remembered his Korean professor's saying about the lofty sacrifice of Vietnamese people who helped Cambodia avoid the race extermination.
The two professors highly evaluated the special role of Vietnamese education for the development of the country. To share experiences with Vietnam, they suggested taking references to the typical models of education in Korea. Japan and the United States with the desire that Vietnam would inherit and develop the quintessence of the world education.
After visiting University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Hồ Chí Minh City, they would travel to Siem Rep to see how a country escaping the race extermination by Khmer Rouge thirty years ago has revived. The two professors have been looking forward to the economic and social cooperation between Korea and Southeast Asian countries.
